Sharpen ice skates with a grinding bench? 3
This can be a serious idea, but I was wondering if I could sharpen my shoes with a sharpener instead of paying for each time to sharpen my shoes professionally. Suggestions are appreciated.
This is not a good idea and I can tell you from experience. I tried it once and it completely ruined my skates. It's not that you can't sharpen it with a sharpener as you want if you intend to sharpen it as you would an ax or an ax. I think Mike has a bad idea. The skate blade should not be sharpened like a single point ax, but should rest at a point in the flat U. This level is difficult to achieve with a normal self-grinding mill. If you use the grinder on the blade at a 90 degree angle, you will get an almost flat blade with no flow. Some ice hockey players use (or have used) flat, sharp knives because they slip too much. On the other hand, if you try to make your skates roll parallel to the direction of grinding
1) You will need the right thickness (1/2 inch) and grinding wheel with curved edge.
2) Although you can find a 1/2 "curved edge wheel, it will be very difficult to move the bearing so that the wheel is between the blades.
I think if you have to play with a hand sharpener, this is the way to go, not as good as a professional sharpener.
